A 2022 Holiday Message from Ed Broadbent and Jen Hassum

Dear Friends,

With the holiday season upon us, it is time to reflect on the year to be. We hope you and your loved ones are well in these challenging days. At the Broadbent Institute, we are continuing to work our best to build a better world.

It’s been a long and wild political year in Canada. From the occupation of Ottawa by the so-called “trucker convoy” to the re-election of Doug Ford in Ontario to Pierre Poilievre dominating the Conservative Party leadership race with the backing of thousands of convoy supporters, there are worrying signs of things to come. Not the least of which is the recent announcement South of the border that Donald Trump will be running for President once again.

For over 10 years, the Broadbent Institute has combated rightwing extremism. Whether the truckers, Ford, Poilievre or Trump, our job remains the same: While they push the boundaries of the extreme, our challenge is to hold the line on democracy and work in solidarity to press for a better rights-based tomorrow.

Can you help us pushback against these extremist forces by making an end-of-year donation to our Solidarity Fund? Donations made before December 31st will be matched, dollar for dollar, by three incredible, generous labour unions.

Right-wing propagandists like Canada Proud and Rebel Media are well funded–stoking frustrations, spreading division, which, is giving certain politicians cover to move further to the Right.

Our thoughtful policy work, hard-hitting investigative journalism at PressProgress, and the training we do to empower the next generation of activists is focused on defending democracy by combating what is being called the “Trump effect" here in Canada.

To take this work to the next level, we are asking our friends and allies to dig deep and contribute to the Solidarity Fund.

Here’s what your donation to the Solidarity Fund will do:

Media: Bring the investigations of right-wing extremists and fact-checking of misinformation that Press Progress is known for to more Canadians through video content and a podcast.

Training: Train 200 new organizers and launch a leaders network at the Broadbent Institute 2023 Progress Summit, bringing together a cohort of 20 new young leaders.

Policy: Launch a new journal focused on public policy and strategy that will combine the best researchers with the freshest ideas on how to address the critical issues we are facing as a society, such as economic inequality, access to housing, and the crisis in healthcare.

This critically important work combating right-wing extremism while fixing an economic system that is rigged against so many Canadians can only happen with your support. Click here to donate to the Solidarity Fund today! From all of us at the Broadbent Institute, we send best wishes to you and your family this holiday season!

Warmest regards,

Ed Broadbent, Institute Founder
