Dear Prime Minister Trudeau and Minister Gould;

Your government’s  commitment that the 2015 election would be the last conducted under first-past-the-post was extremely clear. The Prime Minister and the government repeated it numerous times, including in the Speech from the Throne. It is unacceptable that you are now breaking that commitment.

The members of the special parliamentary committee on electoral reform heard from dozens of experts and crisscrossed the country to hear directly from citizens. Tens of thousands of Canadians signed petitions, attended committee events and wrote letters. The response was overwhelming in favour of adopting a system of proportional representation.

The multi-party committee listened, working together to draft a historic majority report with a road map for genuine reform and recommending a fair and proportional electoral system. They showed us that politics can be done differently - just like you said they could during the campaign.

Canadians invested in the electoral reform process. We believed that you would see the process through.

To completely disregard the hard work and contributions of so many Canadians is shockingly cynical and disheartening. Now more than ever citizens need to know that our leaders are listening and trustworthy.

I urge you to take the committee's recommendations to heart and honour your commitment to reform our electoral system.
