In March 2023, in partnership with Vancity, the Broadbent institute launched its inaugural Emerging Leaders Program - a transformative initiative uniting visionary minds from across Canada. This groundbreaking program seeks to cultivate a community of diverse, innovative, and socially conscious leaders.
The goal of the Broadbent Institute’s Emerging Leaders Program is to provide leaders working for systemic change with hands-on training and ongoing mentorship and networking opportunities to increase their skills and capacity around progressive policies and projects. As one of final projects founder Ed Broadbent supported before his passing in January 2024, the program seeks to shape the next generation of progressive leadership as a part of his legacy for the future of the fight for justice and equality.

The Emerging Leaders program is a nine-month program. Throughout this program, participants will engage in a multifaceted learning experiences with in-depth Director-level training, ongoing mentorship and networking opportunities to increase their skills and capacity around strategic thinking, progressive policies and project management. In addition to that, participants will receive an invitation and partake in the 2024 Progress Summit and 2024 Broadbent Gala.
Program Overview
The Broadbent Institute’s Emerging Leaders Program will bring together 15-20, community-minded leaders from across Canada who are committed to a more just, inclusive, green and equitable society and who are actively working for positive change in their communities.
The Emerging Leaders will be exposed to existing best practices at the 2024 Progress Summit and also participate in specialized training through an in-depth all-day leadership workshop where they will be provided with hands-on tools to further develop their leadership skills and networks. Emerging Leaders will be provided with ongoing mentorship and networking opportunities by the Broadbent Institute throughout the year, including an all-paid attendance at the 2024 Progress Summit and the 2024 Broadbent Gala.
Skill development will include but not be limited to:
- Effective team leadership and communication skills
- Successful methods for organizing advocacy campaigns
- Business management, including budgeting and banking
- Government relations, both as insider and outsider
- How to engage effectively with stakeholders, consult and build consensus in communities
- Digital, social and traditional media best practices for communicating ideas and fostering public interest and support
In-person attendance at the 2024 Progress Summit in Ottawa from April 10th - 12th , 2024, is mandatory for selected applicants. At this point, the program is offered in English only.
Note: Participation includes travel, accommodation and meals
Who is selected?
Emerging Leaders are selected for this non-partisan program based on the work they are doing to make a positive impact on society and how skilling up will help build capacity around progressive policy priorities in Canada. In particular, we recruit and encourage leaders whose work aligns with the Broadbent Institute’s policy priorities and broader Broadbent Principles to participate in the program. Current policy priorities include:
- Decommodification of care, including the protection and expansion of public health care, credential recognition, and fair compensation for workers
- Empowerment of workers, including traditional and new labour organizing, migrant rights, economics that work for everyday people, and democratic reform
- Climate action, including just transition, environmental justice, and the decarbonization of transportation and electricity
- Social democracy and the promotion of equity through feminism, anti-racism, the environmental movement, the recognition of disability rights and Indigenous rights

At this time, in-person attendance at the 2024 Progress Summit in Ottawa from April 10 - 12, 2024 is mandatory for selected applicants as the specialized training session will take place at the summit.
