Wealth and income gap in Canada is at an all-time high, and its tax system is allowing for wealth to be hoarded by a few by taxing profits at a lower rate than income. During the pandemic, Canadian billionaires have increased their wealth by $78 billion. Today, the top 1% control 25% of total wealth in Canada, while the bottom 40% control 1.2% of all wealth. To get to the bottom of how the rich are getting absurdly richer and exactly how they’re getting away with it, authors Angella MacEwen and Jonathan Gauvin will answer all your tax justice questions, and unpack how Canada got to this extreme segregation of wealth, and its solutions.

Angella MacEwen is a Senior Economist at CUPE National, and a policy fellow with the Broadbent Institute.

Her primary focus is understanding the impacts of Canadian economic and social policy on workers, especially climate policy and international trade and investment treaties. Angella writes a quarterly publication, Economy at Work, which aims to communicate current economic issues to a broad audience. She holds an MA in Economics from Dalhousie University.

Jonathan Gauvin has been the federal NDP’s Director of Policy since December 2017 and contributed to the drafting of the NDP’s election platform in 2019.

Prior to that, he was an issue coordinator in the NDP leader’s office. He holds degrees from the University of Ottawa and l’Université Laval. He’s a political buff who deeply wishes to build a better world for everyone, especially his two children. He lives in Gatineau, Quebec.
